Mimulus

FearKnown fear, timidity

Step 1 · State (recognise)

There are specific things you're afraid of. You know exactly what they are — and the body is tense anyway.

Step 2 · Allow (the core)

I allow the fear to be here, without letting it stop me.

Step 3 · Back to the body

Notice your belly. The body is touching, the body is breathing.

If you'd like the body to hold this state more easily, this is a good place to start.

In depth

【Emotional signature】

Mimulus shows up when the fear is concrete and nameable. You know what you're afraid of — a situation, a person, an occasion, an action — and the tension and pulling back are there regardless. This isn't irrational. It's the body's natural vigilance towards threat. Your reasoning has understood; your body still needs time.

【Through the lens of neuroception】

What this card reflects: the body stays on guard against a known threat, and the alarm keeps sounding even when you know the risk is limited. In this state, the body may show: * The belly tightening, bracing in advance * An urge to step back when the specific situation arrives * Shallower breathing, attention concentrated on the risk This is not a problem. The body is making sure you are safe — it just needs to be settled slowly.

【How this essence supports you】

The support of Mimulus is in staying with you alongside the fear. It doesn't ask you to be brave, and it doesn't push you across it. It lets the body slowly feel that even with fear present, a small step forward is still possible. When safety is built inside the body, fear turns its volume down on its own.

【Today's practice】

When you're facing the thing that frightens you, pause first. Let your attention rest lightly on your belly. There's no need to change your breathing — just know that the body is breathing. Let the fear be felt, without hurrying to remove it.

【Working with MUNI Scent】

Press a small amount of MUNI Scent into your palm, or open the bottle near your nose and take three easy breaths of it. Then rest a hand on your belly and let scent and touch keep you company, without expecting anything to change. Smell is the only sense that skips rational analysis and reaches the centres of emotion and memory directly — let the scent be a support, so the body can stay connected even inside the fear.

How to work with this

Body awareness here is not about hunting for what hurts, and not about making the body become something. It's about choosing a part of the body that is relatively easy to feel, so attention has somewhere to rest. This is not for the sake of removing fear, nor to convince yourself that it's fine. It is simply keeping company with the experience that is happening. No intervening, no correcting — letting awareness unfold on its own, once it's allowed to.

For practitioners

If you are using this card with a practitioner: * Keep your voice steady and gentle; avoid "there's nothing to be afraid of" * Watch for the belly softening, the breath returning to the body, a stronger sense of standing * You might say: "The fear can be here. We'll go slowly." When you use MUNI Scent together: In a shared scent environment, the body finds it easier to hold fear and safety at once, so moving forward isn't forced out of you — it happens on its own.
